Good morning and welcome to Awake58 — Analisa here.
Under the 20-plus year leadership of Dr. Vicki Karolewics, Wallace State Community College-Hanceville in rural Alabama has seen significant, steady improvements in student success.
The college’s three-year graduation rate is 48%, compared to a national average of 35%, and median earnings for graduates are 11% more per year than the living wage in the college’s service area. Those outcomes are a testament to Karolewics’ guiding goal that “every graduate gains a ‘good job’ and earns wages sufficient to support themselves and their families.”
Significant reforms focused on student success led to Wallace State being recognized as a 2025 Aspen Rising Star and as a top 10 finalist for the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, alongside North Carolina’s Forsyth Tech and Stanly Community College.
On Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m., Karolewics will deliver the 2026 Dallas Herring Lecture, hosted by Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research at NC State. Her lecture will focus on a systems approach to student success and calls on institutions to redesign systems around the full student lifecycle — where every structure, process, and employee is aligned around helping students complete credentials of value and achieve long-term success.
Following her lecture, Stanly Community College President John Enamait and Achieving the Dream President and CEO Lenore Rodicio will join the Belk Center’s AJ Jaeger for a moderated fireside chat, where they will reflect on implications for community colleges across North Carolina and nationwide.
If you haven’t yet, I encourage you to reserve your virtual seat to the lecture today.
Until next time,
Analisa Archer
