Last night, EducationNC was honored with four awards at the N.C. Press Association’s annual editorial awards banquet. Liz Bell, Analisa Sorrells, vice chair and editorial advisor Ferrell Guillory, and I were on hand to accept the awards.

Duke University Green-Rossiter Award

Team EducationNC was awarded the Duke University Green-Rossiter Award for Distinguished Newspaper Work in Higher Education for The Blitz: Visiting all 58 North Carolina Community Colleges. Keith Lawrence, executive director of news and communications at Duke University, presented the award, noting that the judges said “this project was smart, ambitious, sweeping, and eye-opening; no doubt readers learned a lot about the 58 community colleges in their midst. The project had many ways to engage readers from feature stories to videos to Q&As with college presidents, questions asked of readers, a newsletter, and social media.” Read more about our community college blitz in this article by Better News, “Building trust from the start: How EducationNC set out to learn about and serve a prospective new audience.”

Best Multimedia Project

Liz Bell was awarded first place in the “Best Multimedia Project” category for Equity Meets Education.

Photography, Feature

Yasmin Bendaas was awarded second place in the “Photography, Feature” category for her article entitled “Eastern NC high school students blend leadership and STEM learning.”

Education Reporting

Liz Bell and Analisa Sorrells received third place in “Education Reporting” for their work on the Governor’s Commission on Access to Sound Basic Education.
