Opportunity scholarship students meet lawmakers

House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger held a press conference on opportunity scholarships with Darrell Allison, president of Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina on March 24, 2015. Allison brought with him a large crowd of parents and students who have benefited from the program.

The press conference was the capstone of a long day at the legislature for opportunity scholarship (also known as voucher) families. They gathered earlier in the day to hear from Allison, Berger and some of the parents who participate in the program. Following that gathering, families then took to the halls to thank legislators for the program and to show them that they want it to continue.

“I am personally committed to not only continuing the program, but expanding it,” Berger said at the gathering earlier in the day. “It is heartening to see parents engage with the education of their children, and opportunity scholarships is one of the vehicles that allows parents to take more control.”
