Maiden’s Huffman makes history and Foard doubles team win 2A girls tennis individual titles

Zoe Huffman ended her career on Saturday at Middle Creek Park in Cary as a four-time N.C. High School Athletic Association state champion in girls tennis.

The senior from Maiden High (Maiden, N.C.) won her third 2A singles title, the other two coming her freshman and junior years. Huffman competed as a doubles player in 2016, where she and Toni Laney won the 2A doubles titles.

Huffman is one of just 10 players all-time to win three singles championships. If South Mecklenburg’s Jenna Thompson wins the 4A title tomorrow, she will become the 11th.

Huffman defeated Jessica Fuchs of Oak Grove (Midway, N.C.) 6-0, 6-0. It was Oak Grove’s first time getting a girls tennis player to the finals. The school opened in the fall of 2017 in northern Davidson County.

On the doubles’ side, Alexis Wolgemuth and Emily Campbell from Fred T. Foard (Propst Crossroads, N.C.) defeated Zoe Panizza and Annie Thomas of Lake Norman Charter (Huntersville, N.C.) 6-2, 6-4. Wolgemuth and Campbell are the school’s first doubles state champions and are the only other girls tennis state champs from the school aside from two-time singles champ Lauren Isenhour.
