The Editor’s Notes
On Tuesday night, just a month after Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina, the Pioneer Playmakers premiered an original theater production — titled “Surge” — to a full house at Watauga High School (WHS). It includes an original score.
It is breathtaking. It is inspiring. It is unbelievable that it is so good especially given that it was crafted so fast.
People far and wide need to know about it and see it and celebrate it. Journalists need to wrestle with the implications of it.
POY Beckie Spears was in attendance, which meant so much to the students, teacher directors of the play, the principal, and me.
Please take a few minutes to watch the opening scene and the original score. If you have any ideas about how to share this with a wider and wider audience, please reach out to me at mrash at ednc.org.
To Sarah Miller and Zach Walker, brava!
