Charlotte-Mecklenburg educators awarded artist fellowship

Two educators from Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte were awarded a creative renewal fellowship from the Arts & Science Council. According to the Arts & Science Council’s website, the fellowship is a “sabbatical-like experience for Mecklenburg-based creatives with over 10 years of experience looking to expand or re-invigorate their creative practice.”

Margaret Maurice and Bryan Wilson are two of the ten fellows selected. The awardees receive $15,000 to put towards supplies, workshop, residencies, or apprenticeship fees, plus costs for travel and living accommodations.

Maurice plans to participate in an “apprenticeship-based study with piano technician Allan Day, attend Bang on a Can’s LOUD Weekend at MASS MoCA, and complete a two-week research trip to the Netherlands, Belgium, and the Paris region,” according to the Arts & Science Council’s website.

Maurice was named the fine arts educator of the year in 2023, and is a long time member of the NC Music Educators Association.

Wilson is a Charlotte based artist whose fellowship theme is “reinvigorating a mid-career practice through reflection and research.” He will use the grant to “explore new dimensions of his visual art through inquiry and creative development.”

Maurice said the fellowship, “highlights public school arts educators not only as teachers, but also as practicing artists whose continued growth matters to students, schools, and the wider community.”
