Just a few months after its unveiling, myFutureNC’s educational attainment goal—2 million 25- to 44-year-olds with a high-quality postsecondary degree or credential by 2030—continues to receive important endorsements from leading statewide organizations. Most recently, the UNC Board of Governors, State Board of Community Colleges, and NCWorks Commission adopted the goal, demonstrating that North Carolina’s education and workforce communities are committed to the goal and the work toward making it a reality.

“These resolutions and endorsements are encouraging,” said myFutureNC Chairman, Dale Jenkins. “They further solidify that ‘2 million by 2030’ is not just aspirational. It can be a reality. We are facing a crisis in our state and, with the commitment to collaboration by our leaders in education, business and government, we can together take on the challenges before us and secure a successful future for North Carolinians and our great state.”

On May 15, NCWorks Commission approved a strategic two-year plan called “Preparing North Carolina’s Workforce for Today and Tomorrow” with four major goals. Part of the commission’s first goal—prepare workers to succeed in the North Carolina economy by increasing skills and education attainment—calls for making progress toward the goal set by the myFutureNC organization.

Two days later, the State Board of Community Colleges adopted its resolution recognizing that “more opportunities for students today will help North Carolina become a more attractive place for businesses to start, expand and relocate in the future.” The State Board committed to working toward fulfilling the attainment goal as part of its 2018-2022 “Putting Education to Work” strategic plan and will promote the goal throughout the 58 community colleges across the state.

On May 22, the UNC System Board of Governors also passed a resolution in support of myFutureNC’s attainment goal. Part of the UNC system’s strategic plan is to “increase degree attainment and deepen partnerships that help local communities and the state’s economy.”

In February, the myFutureNC Commission set an ambitious statewide education attainment goal for the State of North Carolina. myFutureNC has already secured support from Governor Cooper, President Pro Tempore Phil Berger and Speaker Moor as well as goal endorsements from the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU), the State Board of Education and Governor Cooper’s Education Cabinet.
