Year in Review: EdNC’s top 10 news stories of 2024
The year 2024 has been a big one for public schools in North Carolina.
We saw and will continue to assess the impact of school choice expansion, resulting in more public funding for private schools than ever before.
At the end of June, federal child care stabilization funding ended, and we continue to track the closures and impact on children and families.
We also wrote about the federal funding cliff for public schools at the end of September, which was the last of the $190 billion for public education issued by the federal government during the pandemic.
On Sunday, Sept. 29, President Joe Biden granted Gov. Cooper’s request for a Federal Major Disaster Declaration for western North Carolina due to Hurricane Helene, which Cooper called “an unprecedented tragedy.” You were with us as we traveled the impacted areas and reported on the relief and support available from both the state and federal government. To date, our team has written 63 stories about the impact of the storm.
