From families to teachers, policymakers to philanthropists — EdNC gets questions from so many groups about what the science of reading is, how implementation is going, and where we stack up among other states on this same journey.

Let’s get answers together.

On Thursday, June 9, I’m going to sit down with national and state leaders to talk literacy instruction. We’re going to look at North Carolina’s science of reading law and talk about how it compares to similar laws enacted or under consideration in other states. We’re going to get an update on how implementation efforts are going — and ask about how they could be going better.

Much has been written about the importance of reading proficiency by third grade. Much more has been written about our state’s and nation’s failures in this regard. So the stakes are high to get it right. As things move fast in both the General Assembly and with our state education authorities, it’s important to pause and make sure all stakeholder questions are answered.
