Several school districts will close next Wednesday as thousands of teachers plan to protest at the General Assembly for higher teacher pay, more per-pupil funding, student and community health, school safety, and infrastructure needs.
The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) is hosting the rally, which begins with a march from Salisbury Street to the legislative building. According to NCAE’s website, teachers plan to fill the chamber galleries as the legislature comes back into session, followed by a “Rally for Respect” in the Bicentennial Plaza in the afternoon.
As of Tuesday, the following school districts had decided to close for students Wednesday due to the volume of expected teacher absences: Wake, Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Guilford, Durham, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Orange, Nash-Rocky Mount, Mooresville Graded Schools, Iredell-Statesville, Pitt, Cabarrus, and Asheville City.
