On January 20, 1840, the first state-funded public school opened its doors in the Williamsburg Community located in southeastern Rockingham County.

As part of the Every Child’s Chance, Every Community’s Future campaign, the N.C. Association of School Administrators hosted student contests to honor the 175th anniversary of our state’s first public school.
