					<p>On January 20, 1840, the <a href="https://www.dncr.nc.gov/blog/2016/01/20/launch-public-schools-north-carolina-1840#:~:text=On%20January%2020%2C%201840%2C%20North,Image%20from%20the%20State%20Archives.">first state-funded public school opened its doors</a> in the Williamsburg Community located in southeastern Rockingham County.</p>

<p>As part of the Every Child's Chance, Every Community's Future campaign, the N.C. Association of School Administrators hosted student contests to honor the 175th anniversary of our state's first public school.</p>

On January 20, 1840, the first state-funded public school opened its doors in the Williamsburg Community located in southeastern Rockingham County.
