Perspective | Education Matters: Connecting kids to learning during COVID-19

North Carolina’s public schools have now been closed for two weeks due to the Coronavirus outbreak, and Gov. Cooper announced that they will continue to be closed until at least May 15.

Given these unprecedented circumstances, we are continuing our series on the coronavirus this week. Today, we’ll hear from three of our state’s education leaders who will discuss the impacts on educators and students as well as what schools, districts, and policymakers are doing to reach all of our students during this time of uncertainty.

We at Education Matters are practicing social distancing so, as you can see, we’re filming in a new format today and our interviews will be conducted virtually.

Guests:

Dr. David Stegall, deputy superintendent of innovation at the Department of Public Instruction

Mariah Morris, 2019 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year

Dr. Catherine Edmonds, superintendent of the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public School System

Public School Forum of North Carolina

Since 1986, the Public School Forum of North Carolina has been an indispensable and nonpartisan champion of better schools and the most trusted source in the state for research and analysis on vital education issues. We bring together leaders from business, education, and government to study education issues, develop ideas, seek consensus, and ultimately inform and shape education policy. We do that through research, policy work, innovative programs, advocacy, and continuing education for educators and policymakers.
