In late September of 2024, a Haywood Community College Forestry Management Technology class was just starting back up after summer. These students are passionate about tree care and are trained to work with wood in a myriad of different ways.

When Helene arrived in their community, a group from the class got the keys to the timber sports shed, grabbed their axes and chainsaws, and headed out to help.

Listen to three of these students — Thad Johnston, Michael Archer and Tony Gündüz — as they talk about trees, the gifts of their region, and the help they were able to offer in the wake of the storm.
