Perspective | Rockingham County High senior depicts the effects of COVID-19 through art

Payten Bayne, a senior at Rockingham County High School, drew the artwork pictured below as part of her art class with Leigh Ann Cross, visual arts teacher at the high school.

We asked Bayne to reflect on her work. The following is her response.

Artwork by Payten Bayne

I created this piece for an art assessment given to me by my teacher Mrs. Cross. The assignment was to depict how COVID-19 affects us.

I had seen some pictures online that showed how other people were feeling. These pictures inspired me to create my piece.

Everyone is affected by COVID-19 in many different ways. I hope that people who see my piece realize what seniors are really going through. Our senior year was ripped from us, we are forced to complete our classes on a computer, and our last year to play sports is down the drain.

Although I don’t have many classes this semester, it is still hard to communicate with my teachers. After high school, I plan to attend Rockingham Community College. There, I hope to take classes and try to find out what exactly I want to do for a career. I’m not set on my major yet, but I do think it would be cool to minor in art.
