Old Town continues to strive towards teaching the whole student

The staff and board of EducationNC visited Old Town Elementary in Winston-Salem Friday. Old Town, which we’ve previously reported on, is an example of a school that has met students’ needs despite adverse circumstances.

Liz Bell

Liz Bell was an award-winning reporter for EdNC for 10 years from 2016-26, garnering state and national recognition for her leadership on early child care. She is currently a Spencer Education Fellow at Columbia Journalism School.

Bell grew up in Hickory and went to Fred T. Foard High School. She is a graduate from the School of Media and Journalism at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a minor in Hispanic Studies. She has previously written for The Daily Tar Heel, UNC’s student newspaper, and The News and Observer. In her free time, she likes to travel, run, go to concerts, garden, and solve crossword puzzles.
