The following is a press release from North Carolina Public Schools

The North Carolina State Board of Education, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and colleges/universities associated with the North Carolina Governor’s School are pleased to announce an exciting new venture for this hallmark program annually serving hundreds of the state’s brightest and most talented high school students. Meredith College (Raleigh) will continue its excellent hosting of Governor’s School East, while Governor’s School West is transitioning from Salem College (Winston-Salem),the original campus home for North Carolina and a model for the country, to High Point University (High Point), beginning with the summer of 2019. This positions the Governor’s School for the growth necessary to meet the ever-increasing demand of our outstanding students in North Carolina’s K-12 education public and private schools.

“For fifty-five years, Salem enjoyed a close relationship with the Governor’s School,” said Sandra J. Doran, President of Salem Academy and College. “Hosting Governor’s School West on our campus this summer would have been difficult because we are planning maintenance and repairs to several of our residence halls and academic facilities. We are pleased that our neighbors at High Point University are able to take the baton and provide a space for this enriching summer program for North Carolina’s brightest high school students, and we hope to welcome the Governor’s School West students to our campus in the future.” High Point University (HPU) offers an innovative and transformational campus to serve as the home for Governor’s School West. Under the visionary leadership of President Nido Qubein, HPU is excited to work with and support the Governor’s School administration, faculty and staff to continue the program’s unique and diverse curricular offerings in arts and academics, complemented by HPU’s passionate commitment to life skills development. HPU joins the collaboration of North Carolina colleges/universities invested in the Governor’s School model as a jewel of public education for the state’s next generation of leaders.

Students selected for the 2019 Governor’s School session have received their invitations, with more preparation details soon forthcoming. Both Meredith College and High Point University will provide a safe, nurturing and accessible environment as these students embark on their Governor’s School experience. The State Board of Education and Department of Public Instruction offer gratitude to all three of these preeminent institutions of higher education and look forward to many more summers of success for our North Carolina students.
