Legislative leaders have reached a truce, and votes on the budget are expected on Thursday and Friday. There are drafts circulating, but EdNC won’t be reporting on the budget until we see the final version that will be voted on.
The NC Tribune is highlighting this morning a provision in the draft to expand the purview of the Joint Legislative Commission on Governmental Operations. Its watchdog role over state agencies would broaden to include “public authorities, units of local government, and non-state entities receiving public funds.” Ray Gronberg with the NC Tribune notes two things of importance: 1) it appears this would allow legislative scrutiny of K-12 public schools, and 2) this provision is a surprise — it did not appear in any draft of the budget.
