New from EdNC

The Editor’s Notes
My thanks to Senator Mike Lee, former CMS Superintendent Earnest Winston (who is also a journalist!), and North Carolina’s 2022 Beginning Teacher of the Year Xavier Adams for being willing to share their perspectives on DEI with EdNC and our audience. To the authors, thank you for your patience with me in getting these published. To our readers, each of these leaders offers something important based on both their role and their lived experience.
The Senator clarifies what the bill does not do.
The Superintendent presents five critical questions for educators to ask themselves.
The Teacher calls for an investment in the development of “nuanced curriculum about complicated histories,” and gives us an example of how and when we have been able to connect practice to policy before.
The spirit with which these authors share their perspectives also matters.
Adams says, “We don’t get to choose the history that we inherit, but we can choose how we respond to it by making a better society for all of North Carolina’s students.”
Winston calls on all of us to “make a difference that lasts far beyond the classroom.”
And Lee seeks for education to remain “a pathway to knowledge and success for all.”
Please read and share.
