EdNC. Essential education news. Important stories. Your voice.

5/2/2023

The N.C. State Board of Education meets today at UNC-Charlotte for the bi-annual planning and work session. Here is the agenda.

Tune in if you can to the House Education K-12 meeting at 1pm. Here is the agenda, which includes the charter school omnibus, open enrollment, school choice expansion, and more.

Yesterday, EdNC gathered in person in Durham for a day of team-building, wellness, co-working, and lessons in leadership. We kicked off the morning at Cocoa Cinnamon, a coffee shop that describes itself as “Latina co-owned, women-forward.”

The whole team then stopped by Lakewood Elementary School to highlight the leadership of Turquoise Parker, the media coordinator.

We held our all-team meetings at the Museum of Life and Science, including a visit to the butterfly pavilion to think together about the role of pollinators in our work and our world.

Later, we had lunch at Ekhaya, a Black-owned Bantu fusion restaurant co-owned by former two-time Durham Teacher of the Year.

To close out the day, we heard from Fran Gary and Anita Brown-Graham about their experience as community leaders.

These are the sources EdNC checks every day: The New York Times, The 74, Education Week, The NC Tribune, The Insider, The News & Observer, The Charlotte Observer, WUNC, WFAE, Brookings, Education Commission of the States, and DPI’s News. A cross section of diverse sources are checked weekly and monthly. If you have an article you think needs to be included, email [email protected].
