The Editor’s Notes
Mountain Heritage High School in Yancey County has long had a strategic asset: an indoor housebuilding facility. EdNC’s Caroline Parker wrote this feature in 2022 about the students and educators who were building homes for community members in need long before Hurricane Helene.
In the aftermath of the hurricane, the leaders in Yancey County Schools iterated the program to be able to build eight homes a school year in each of the next five years. They need $480,000 per year or $2,400,000 in total to support the program and meet the need.
Yesterday, the students were featured on Good Morning America as hometown heroes.
While the rest of the world may think of all of WNC as “Asheville,” we know you are #YanceyStrong!
If you would like to support these students, please reach out to me at mrash at ednc.org.
