Today’s look at what’s going on in McDowell County Schools is just a first look. From a middle school magnet model designed to build thinkers to universal pre-K to their own advanced leadership roles pilot to transitioning an alternative school into a STEM early college, they are daring to do things differently. I was greeted by a school pig named “Crispy Bacon,” and met teachers who have previous lives as a NASA scientist and a cryptid hunter and a published novelist. One teacher drives from Asheville to teach in a school he calls home. A beginning teacher said his access to an effective mentor has been “absolutely invaluable.” It’s a district that is pulling together instead of apart in the face of these unprecedented times.
