Here is what happened over the weekend with regards to SNAP. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson issued an administrative stay late on Friday. Here is a link to the documents submitted to the court for consideration. Here is a link to her order. The order says she expected the First Circuit Court of Appeals to issue a more complete ruling “with dispatch.” Her administrative stay terminates 48 hours after the First Circuit’s “expeditious resolution” of the motion before it.
Why Justice Brown? She is responsible for emergency applications for that part of the country.
On Saturday, the U.S. Agriculture Department issued a memo that, according to the New York Times, “told states that they must ‘immediately undo’ any actions to provide full food stamp benefits to low-income families.”
Then on Sunday, the federal appeals court in Boston issued its ruling. “In light of these unique facts, we cannot conclude that the district court abused its discretion in requiring full payment of November SNAP benefits to effectuate the October 31 [temporary restraining order] after the government had failed to comply with it,” says the order, according to reporting by CNBC. Remember Brown’s order keeps that ruling from taking effect for 48 hours so until Tuesday night.
In the meantime, there was some movement in Congress on the shutdown. Stay tuned.
