On Sept. 27-28, 2024, the Dudley Flood Center for Educational Equity and Opportunity (Flood Center) will host its annual Color of Education summit. The convening will bring together educators, policymakers, advocates, researchers, students, and other stakeholders to progress collective action toward achieving racial equity and eliminating racial disparities in education.
The summit is a partnership between the Flood Center, the Public School Forum of North Carolina, the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University, and the Center for Child and Family Policy at Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy.
Last year, over 800 participants attended the event, which was centered on the theme of “co-creating equitable spaces in education.” The event featured breakout sessions and panel discussions in addition to speeches from the Flood Center’s namesake, Dr. Dudley Flood; Newbery Medal author, Jerry Craft; and author, researcher, and retired professor, Dr. Lisa Delpit.
The keynote speaker for this year’s summit is the scholar, political commentator, and James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor at Princeton University, Dr. Eddie Glaude Jr.
Dr. Glaude is the author of several works, including, “Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul,” “In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America,” and the New York Times bestseller, “Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and its Urgent Lessons for Our Own.”
Released in April 2024, Dr. Glaude’s latest book, “We Are the Leaders We Have Been Looking For,” is based on the W. E. B. Du Bois Lectures at Harvard University.
The first day of the summit will be virtual, while the second day will be hybrid. During the two days, attendees will engage in topics focused on the theme of “Collective Action: People & The Arc of Justice.”
The Flood Centered is offering a limited number of free tickets for teachers and students. For more information about registration visit the Color of Education event page.
