The following is a press release from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.

Research Triangle Park, N.C. – The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is pleased to announce the recipients of 13 Student Science Enrichment Program grants. The grants support informal science education programs that take place outside of the traditional classroom time and total $2.1 million.

The Student Science Enrichment Program was created in 1996 to support North Carolina science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education programs that provide a hands-on experience for participants. These awards provide up to $60,000 per year for three years. Since 1996, the program has funded 201 awards for $32 million.

“We will continue to provide support for STEM education for North Carolina’s students, particularly in the areas of the state where such support is much needed,” said BWF President John Burris, Ph.D. “Our goal is to inspire the next generation of scientists and leaders in our state and in our country.”

There are 1.5 million children in North Carolina’s public and charter schools and SSEP has reached an estimated 38,000 students, in addition to parents, teachers, school administrators, and scientists. BWF’s giving spans all 100 counties in North Carolina through out-of-school time, inquiry-based STEM programs.
