New from EdNC

The Editor’s Notes
After 10 Senate Republicans sent a letter to OMB and 24 states including NC filed suit, today the U.S. Department of Education will release $1.3 billion in funding for the 21st Century grants, which supports out-of-school programs, according to a notice sent out by the department on Friday and reported by Education Week. The grant award notifications (GAN) will come with a new requirement to certify compliance with federal civil rights laws. More than $5 billion remains frozen.
Heads up, rural supers! Transcend is kicking off the Rural Career-Connected Collaborative — a fully funded 15-month program starting in January 2026. They are selecting 10 rural communities ready to reimagine their school designs, with a strong focus on career-connected learning.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2026 cohort of Connect Church, a program of Faith in Rural Communities at the NC Rural Center. Connect Church is a one-year learning cohort aimed at helping churches renew their faithful witness and connect with opportunities to improve the health and prosperity of their communities. Click here to learn more and to apply. The deadline to apply is August 30, 2025.
