The Editor’s Notes

In this article, you can see how much money is frozen by federal funding stream for each district, each charter school, and each 21st Century Community Learning Center grant recipient in communities across the state.

Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court granted an application to stay the preliminary injunction in place while two lawsuits proceed on the reduction in force at the U.S. Department of Education.

Here is the order. Here is the dissenting opinion, written by Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Here is McMahon’s statement.

While it is being called a “victory,” the cases will move forward. The upshot? Earlier this year, the department ended the employment of probationary employees and offered buy outs for employees. Add those to the RIF, and the department will have about half the staff it did under previous administrations.

“As we return education to the states, this Administration will continue to perform all statutory duties while empowering families and teachers by reducing education bureaucracy,” says McMahon.
