Governor Pat McCrory made an appearance at today’s North Carolina Chamber Conference on Education. 

Joydeep Ganguly, vice president and general manager of Biogen — the presenting sponsor of the event — quizzed McCrory on topics such as teacher assistants and STEM education.

Here are some excerpts from Governor McCrory’s comments:

“We needed to break down the silos of education.”

“There is a skills gap in North Carolina and our nation.”

“I think there is a need for teacher’s assistants…but each school is different…. I don’t believe in across the board decisions for every school system coming out of Raleigh….”

“The more choice the better, but it’s got to be good choice and the choices should not fail our students.”

“If you have  a STEM academic background, you are going to get a job.”

Superintendent June Atkinson was also at the event and talked to reporters during a break about the continuing resolution (CR) put out by the General Assembly this week. 

Here are some quotes from Superintendent Atkinson’s comments:

“The uncertainty of the budget really puts all of our school districts in a quandry about how to plan.”

“We need to pray a lot because it really is difficult to determine which way the General Assembly will go in its funding this year.”
