Update 11:00 am, April 20, 2021: According to Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Scott Hall, Sutton was found “safe and well” this morning. “The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the community and public for their assistance and concerns in locating Ms. Sutton,” he said in a statement.

Tammi Sutton, the founder of KIPP Eastern North Carolina College Prep Public Schools, was reported missing by “family members” at about 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to a statement by Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Scott Hall.

According to the statement, she was last seen at around 2 p.m. on Saturday in Roanoke Rapids.

“It is believed that she left her home driving a grey 2015 Nissan Pathfinder with NC registration AJJ-6170 with an unknown destination at this time. Both Ms. Sutton and her vehicle has been entered into NCIC as being wanted or missing,” Hall said in the statement.

He also said that Sutton could suffer from depression.

KIPP Gaston College Prep canceled classes today and sent this notification about Sutton’s disappearance.

In a 2015 article about KIPP ENC, EducationNC CEO Mebane Rash wrote:

“Sutton simply does not believe that the demographics of her students should define their destiny, and she absolutely believes that she can get any student that walks through the door into college regardless of poverty, regardless of disability, regardless of race, regardless of anything. As she says, ‘there are no ifs, ands, or buts — we know they can all go to college.'”

Hall said that anyone with information on Sutton’s whereabouts should contact their local law enforcement agency.
