NATION’S NOTES

Raise your hand if you knew the NC Community College system recently adopted a new strategic plan. 

The system’s new plan was adopted in January, but you will likely hear a whole lot more about it now that President Peter Hans has taken charge. The name of the system’s plan, Putting Education to Work, illustrates the core strategic approach of the plan, which is built around four themes:

  • Student Interest and Access
  • Clear and Supported Pathways for Student Progress and Success
  • Economic and Workforce Impact
  • System Effectiveness
Under the theme and question of student interest and access, the community college system goes on to ask how they might overcome a lack of interest — and I would add a lack of quality information — around the pathways within post-secondary education. How might we reduce barriers to entry? I’m curious to know what you think our community colleges might do to accomplish that goal.
