LAST WEEK’S RESULTS

Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law banning sports gambling in most states. Do you think North Carolina should legalize sports betting?

QUOTES FROM LAST WEEK

Lottery, sportsbetting, what is the difference?
-Peter from Lenoir, NC

It would cause more corruption in sports than there is now. Why can’t we just enjoy the sport and not have to make money off of it?

THE QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Memorial Day is a holiday to remember our fallen soldiers, and it’s also a day to spend time with friends and family. What are you most looking forward to this Memorial Day weekend?

OUR PICKS

The Reinvention of America | The Atlantic | May 2018
“Americans don’t realize how fast the country is moving toward becoming a better version of itself.”

Rural and Urban America Have More in Common Than You Think | CityLab | May 22 2018
“Only one in seven Americans reports feeling a strong attachment to their local community, and that share is the same across cities, suburbs, and rural communities.”

NATION’S NOTES

The official start of summer sits on the other end of testing for our students and teachers as many of our neighbors, friends, and family members are preparing for vacation. I have fond memories as a child of summers spent camped out at the library, hiking the trails around Caldwell County, swimming, and spending one week every summer at the beach.

Now, I love to spend summer weekends on jaunts throughout the state. Last summer I spent a long weekend in Asheville and took a day trip to Wilmington, but I also spent two weekends in Kinston. Few would have guessed that Kinston would be a vacation destination even ten years ago. However, Chef Vivian Howard and her team, Stephen Hill and his investments through the Mother Earth collection of companies, and other civic leaders have reshaped the town. James and Deborah Fallows have a new book out entitled Our Towns which argues that towns just like Kinston should give us all hope. I’d encourage you to pick up the book and also check out the excerpt, “The Reinvention of America” — it’s one of Our Picks this week.

As we head in to the long weekend, do you have a town to recommend to us for a weekend trip? Somewhere that we may not have been to before for one reason or another? Send an email to nhahn@ednc.org or text NATION to 73225.

All the best,
Nation
