About the authors

Matt Hickson is a former Durham Public Schools Beginning Teacher of the Year and a Durham Principal’s Leadership Academy Fellow. He is also founder of Bull City Schools United, a project aimed at equipping teachers and students to create safer schools for LGBT students. 

Jacqui Batts is an English Teacher at Northern High School in Durham North Carolina. She is the director of the Bull City Schools United Youth Leadership Council, a project to bring together LGBT young people in Durham to combat racism and heterosexism in schools.

Tracey Barrett is a teacher of AP US History at City of Medicine Academy in Durham Public Schools. She is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and the Duke MAT program. She loves Carolina basketball, coffee ice cream, and “Hamilton”.
