I am fascinated by the discussion around news diet. The author focused on receiving news from old-fashioned newspapers for two months instead of the daily diet of push notifications.
 

NATION’S NOTES

Last week, my colleagues and I participated in the myFutureNC listening session in Lenoir. We then headed to Isothermal Community College in Rutherfordton. We closed out the week in Asheville with visits to Avery’s Creek Elementary School and Asheville-Buncombe Technical College. We racked up hundreds of miles, and we met with dozens of students, school leaders, and community members.

A common theme of all of the conversations was resilience in the face of challenges. Isothermal introduced us to their Rutherford Early College robotics team (who gave us sweet team jackets!). The early college robotics team inspired us with their energy for learning, yet, leadership illustrated the crushing challenges their region faced economically. One leader drove home the point by quoting an old movie, “I’ll never trust happiness again.”

A-B Tech has an award winning culinary program, a partnership with Mission Health that is advancing health care in the region, and more. They also have a food pantry, a clothing closet, and they are working with Single Stop to better serve all of their students.

What does this mean for our state? And for you?

For one, it is important to remember that North Carolina is a large state with complex challenges, and the solutions often require a community-oriented response unique to their people and their opportunities. For another, as we develop narrative arcs and possible solutions, we must remember that place matters.
