myFutureNC Commission hosts first listening session in Greensboro

On Wednesday afternoon, educators, local business owners and community members from across the Triad gathered at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering in Greensboro for the first listening session of the myFutureNC Commission.

Matthew Chamberlin, deputy director of the myFutureNC Commission, began the listening session by discussing the two-fold purpose of the commission.

“The primary goal of the commission is to create a comprehensive statewide education plan from early childhood through post-secondary, trying to recommend clear attainment goals, identify benchmarks, and propose reforms to guide the future of education in North Carolina,” said Chamberlin. “The second piece that we are attempting to do is break down the silos and coordinate between stakeholders.”

Chamberlin also outlined three questions the commission is seeking to address:

  1. What goals should North Carolina set for its education system across the education continuum from early childhood through post-secondary and into the workforce?
  2. What are the barriers that stand in the way from keeping us from fully leveraging the resources we have?
  3. What are the solutions to improve outcomes?

Trip Stallings, director of policy research at the Friday Institute, emphasized the importance of gathering input from community members to ensure that the recommendations that form from the myFutureNC Commission are appropriate.

“How many times have we seen a policy passed, or a commission formed, or an idea baked that when it hit the ground didn’t make sense, even if it looked good on paper?” said Stallings. “The same is going to be true for the work of this commission unless we get your input and voices.”

Between February and mid-July, the myFutureNC Commission will host a total of nine listening sessions. The dates and locations of the remaining sessions are below, followed by a poll where you can RSVP to attend the listening session near your community.
