The following is a statement from Les Atkins, the public information officer of the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Trustees.
In an effort to be part of the educational change in Halifax County, the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District [RRGSD] Board of Trustees is proposing a revised revenue sharing agreement this morning of the county’s approximate $736,000 sales and use taxes to the Halifax County Board of Commissioners.
“While we could not reach an agreement with Weldon City Schools, the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District does NOT want to be the reason the commissioners vote to default to the Per Capita method of distribution which we believe would be a loss for everyone involved including Our Community Hospital, the Town of Weldon, and local volunteer fire departments,” said Jay Carlisle, RRGSD Board Chair.
For that reason, RRGSD is proposing what we believe promotes equality and inclusion as the commissioners have directed.
Roanoke Rapids proposes giving 42.5% of our estimated $497,712 to the Halifax County School system resulting in an additional $211,527.60 going to that district beginning July 1, 2017.
The RRGSD Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet June 28 to officially adopt the proposal.
