NELA: A sense of urgency

Bonnie2

“Every single day teachers have the power to make it a great day for that child or not a great day for that child, and we multiply that across every single school in this state.” – Bonnie Fusarelli, Director of NELA

This week EdNC is running a series of videos from an event that NELA, NC State’s Northeast Leadership Academy, held in May at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. The event brought together teacher leaders, principals, legislators, philanthropy, and other key education stakeholders.

Entitled “Teachers Leading Change: New Pathways for Empowered Teachers and Empowered Leaders,” if you work your way through the videos and the PowerPoints, we hope you will emerge with:

a better understanding of how teacher leadership can result in tangible changes for schools and communities,

a plan for using collective leadership in school and communities, and

a desire to be a part of a state and national network of empowered teachers and empowered leaders.

Bonnie Fusarelli notes the event was structured to present a variety of perspectives, and the hope is that participants will consider whether those perspectives either inhibit or help growth in schools.

At the end of the event, Ann Goodnight of SAS, challenged all of us to strive for continuous improvement in our schools:

“We feel a sense of urgency because of a changing world. A problem with complacency is still out there.”
