US Department of Education asks for revisions to state’s plan for spending federal funds

The state has to revise how it plans to use American Rescue Plan Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds, the latest round of money being sent by the federal government to help states deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. Department of Education sent an email Friday detailing the necessary revisions.

Blair Rhoades, communications director for the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI), said there are 10 required revisions.

“As North Carolina is one of a handful of states where the [General Assembly] has to appropriate the money, therein lies the challenge,” she wrote in an email. “Many of the revisions require greater specificity, which is a result of funding not yet being appropriated.”

Rhoades said DPI will submit revisions by this Friday and then wait to hear back from the federal government.
