Back during digiLEARN’s April meeting — reported on by Alisa Herr — four governors came together to tell EducationNC about their views on digital learning, public support for public education, and more. Beverly Perdue and Jim Hunt, as well as former Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri and former Wyoming Governor Jim Geringer all sat down with EdNC to talk education.
Hunt and Perdue are both Democrats, and Carcieri and Geringer are Republicans. Despite their political differences, they all have a passion for public education, and all four have continued their public service after office. Perdue and Geringer serve on the digiLEARN board, and Hunt and Carcieri are on the board of The Hunt Institute. The four former governors were in town for the April meeting, which brought digiLEARN and The Hunt Institute together in collaboration.

Perdue: “[Digital learning] totally can wipe away the divide that’s existed in education and training for all of our lives.”

“Public education has always been our opportunity to make progress and give opportunities to all of our people.”
Carcieri adds his perspective on the subject:
“My dad was a public school teacher, my parents were the products of the public school, me and my siblings were all products of public schools.”
Finally, Geringer talks about what keeps him up at night when he thinks about education:
“Being sure that students have an opportunity to learn what they need to learn to succeed in life.”
