Principal training program will teach finance and human resources

Today’s North Carolina school principals have to know and do an unbelievable number of things and are significantly underpaid for the knowledge and skills that are required. Two extremely important areas of knowledge and skills required of principals, for which they receive far too little training in their degree programs, are finance and human resources.

The North Carolina Association of School Business Officials (NCASBO) is proud to announce their Principal’s Academy training program in finance and human resources. The NCASBO Principal’s Academy is a series of four courses taught over two (non-consecutive) days and is intended to be for principals, assistant principals, and anybody aspiring to be a school principal in North Carolina.

The course titles, in the order in which they will be taught (two per day), are:

  • School Law, Financial Management, and Internal Controls
  • Special Issues in Financial Management
  • Human Resources and Payroll Management
  • School Accounting and Budgeting – Concepts and Practices

All courses have been written, and will be presented regionally across the state, by experienced North Carolina school finance officers. These are the most comprehensive and North Carolina-specific principal training programs in finance and human resources available. Because so little of this information is taught in principal preparation programs at the IHEs, especially below the doctoral level, these courses should be valuable for any experience level. For more information, please go to the NCASBO website at www.ncasbo.org and click on Programs and Services/Academy Course Catalog/Principal’s Academy.
