North Carolina/Wake County lead nation in Board-certified teachers

North Carolina is tops in teachers for National Board certification, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

The state is number one with 20,677 National Board-certified teachers. The total number of these teachers in the entire country is 111,488. That means North Carolina has about 18.5 percent of them.

Wake County comes out for special recognition with the most number of Nationally Board-certified teachers of any district in the nation. It has 2,509 total.

According to a Wake County Public School System press release, the county has led the list for the past decade.

“Seeking National Board Certification demands significant time and effort from a teacher. In addition to their full-time teaching jobs, the process takes 200-400 hours to complete. They are required to analyze their teaching practices, impact on student learning, take on leadership roles, and collaborate with their peers,” the press release stated. “The National Board program is built upon the belief that establishing higher standards for teachers means better learning for students”
