Guilford superintendent named head of Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation

Maurice “Mo” Green, superintendent for Guilford County Schools and a member of the EdNC Board of Directors, has been named the new executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

Green is taking over for current executive director Leslie Winner, who will retire after eight years as head of the foundation.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to join the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation because it has such a rich history of supporting entities and initiatives that enrich the lives of all North Carolinians,” Green said in a press release.

As superintendent in Guilford, the third largest district in the state, Green was in charge of more than 72,000 students, 217 schools, about 10,000 employees and a more-than $600 million budget. He completed the district’s first strategic plan and started a second, leading to increases in graduation rates and student achievement, according to a press release. Green worked with community leaders to bring Say Yes to Education, the pioneering national scholarship and student-support program, to the district.

“Mo brings with him great knowledge of the depth and breadth of issues affecting our State, as well as significant management experience,” said Jock Tate, president of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and member of the search committee in a press release. “Based on his exemplary leadership and demonstrated success, we are confident that Mo will provide a fresh perspective and a new approach to the work we do, which will have tremendous gains for the Foundation and the people of North Carolina.”

According to its website, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation “invests in nonprofit organizations that are dedicated to building an equitable, sustainable, vibrant state and communities.”
