STEM Academy in Hoke County: Lighting a fire

EdNC continues its in-depth look at the Hoke County Schools. A lead plaintiff in the Leandro lawsuit – which established that each child in North Carolina has a state constitutional right to a sound, basic education – this rural, low-wealth school system under the leadership of Dr. Freddie Williamson has adopted a no excuses philosophy to educating students in poverty with buy-in from all of the stakeholders in the county. The Hoke County Way is all about the learners and the learning.

“The reason that we developed the camp was so that students would be exposed.”

“If we look at our nation, if we look at our nation as compared to other nations, we recognize where we are with science, technology, engineering, and math.”

“We have got to move our students into this area.”

“We have got to light a fire. We’ve got to ignite something. We have to excite them.”
