This week (May 4-8, 2015) is Teacher Appreciation Week and people across the country are taking time to thank the teachers who made a difference in their lives.
Today, Gov. Pat McCrory visited Vernon Malone College and Career Academy in Raleigh for a ceremony honoring North Carolina’s teachers. He asked all the teachers in the audience to raise their hands.
“I want to thank you for your commitment to a noble profession,” Gov. McCrory said.
The governor shared a story about the first class he taught as a 20-year-old student teacher. He ran out of material to teach after about 10 minutes. Gov. McCrory said the next 50 minutes were some of the longest of his life. “Teaching is tough,” he said.
Gov. McCrory presented an official proclamation declaring this week Teacher Appreciation Week.
Along with the festivities, the Kenan Fellows Program announced the recipients of its annual fellowship awards. Forty teachers from across N.C. have been named 2015-16 Kenan Fellows. “Together with the students and staff at Vernon Malone, we are celebrating the passion and dedication of our state’s K-12 educators,” said Elaine Franklin, director of the Kenan Fellows Program at N.C. State.
