Created in 1989, this Committee consists of 22 members from both houses of the North Carolina General Assembly. Eleven members of the Senate are appointed to serve by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, at least three of whom are members of the minority party. Likewise, eleven members of the House of Representatives are appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, at least three of whom are members of the minority party. According to the authorizing statute, the Committee “shall examine, on a continuing basis, the several educational institutions in North Carolina, in order to make ongoing recommendations to the General Assembly on ways to improve public education from kindergarten through higher education” (see N.C. Gen. Stat. §120-12H).
