Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee

IMG_1879Created in 1989, this Committee consists of 22 members from both houses of the North Carolina General Assembly. Eleven members of the Senate are appointed to serve by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, at least three of whom are members of the minority party. Likewise, eleven members of the House of Representatives are appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, at least three of whom are members of the minority party. According to the authorizing statute, the Committee “shall examine, on a continuing basis, the several educational institutions in North Carolina, in order to make ongoing recommendations to the General Assembly on ways to improve public education from kindergarten through higher education” (see N.C. Gen. Stat. §120-12H).

Editor’s Note: EdNC will be posting leadership profiles on the policymakers influencing education in North Carolina. Recently, I met with a member of our General Assembly. He noted that upon becoming a legislator people started treating him like an object. I come from a family that values public service, period. You know our policymakers as politicians. I hope our profiles help you know them better as people. EdNC wants you to be comfortable walking into the legislature, interacting with the legislators, and participating in state government – it is your government after all.
