UNC System President Tom Ross to step down

In the above video, starting from right is UNC System President Tom Ross followed by UNC Board of Governors Chairman John Fennebresque and Board Vice Chairman Louis Bissette.

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors announced today that UNC System President Tom Ross would be stepping down either next January or when a successor is in place, whichever comes later.

The decision was announced in a joint statement between the Board and President Ross.Thirty-one of the 32-member board voted in agreement for Ross to step down. Marty Kotis was the lone holdout. The statement said that performance and ability had nothing to do with the decision.

“The Board believes President Ross has served with distinction, that his performance has been exemplary and that he has devoted his full energy, intellect and passion to fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of his office,” the statement said. “The decision has nothing to do with President Ross’s performance or ability to continue in office.”

The statement went on to say that President Ross had a different timeline in mind for his own transition, but that he accepts the Board’s decision.
